Difference quotient

A difference quotient is the average rate of change of f (x) between x = a and x = a + h and is defined by the expression

Explanation

If y = f (x) and x changes from a to a + Δx then we define the increment of y as

Δy = f (a + Δx) – f (a)

The definition of a derivate is therefore
